Reading: John 11 and Leviticus 16-17
Scripture: Leviticus 16:20-22, "And when he has made an end of atoning for the Holy Place and the tent of meeting and the altar, he shall present the live goat. And Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the people of Israel, and all their transgressions, all their sins. And he shall put them on the head of the goat and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who is in readiness. The goat shall bear all their iniquities on itself to a remote area, and he shall let the goat go free in the wilderness.
Observation: At times I like to look into the history of a word or saying just because I find them interesting and today I was reminded where the term “Scape Goat” came from. Aaron would have to confess everything the people did over this goat before sending it into the wilderness. As good as it would have been for that goat after watching the bull and other goat get sacrificed right in front of it and as Aaron comes up to it with blood all over him and then just being sent into the wilderness.
Application: I am grateful that we don’t have to every time we sin bring an animal sacrifice to an alter. I know that there would be lots of blood on my hands. Jesus being guiltless and the spotless lamb paid the price one and for all. We no longer need a scape goat to send our sins out of camp Jesus paid the price we just have to accept that free gift by believing he did what he said he would do.
Prayer: Father you are so wonderful giving us a picture of how your son would fulfill the covenant you made with Abraham and Moses and creating a new one with us today. I thank you for sending your son to be that sacrifice so that we could have the eternal life with you. I thank you for your provisions and blessings. I ask that you help open our eyes to the truth of your love and the blessings you have for us.
